Toast Masters!

NADC Diploma of Fine Art Year 2 students are working on a collaborative experimental drawing with a difference. Based on an image by American realist painter Edward Hopper, the student's version has a twist: it will be made of toast.

In collaboration with their drawing teacher, Di Holdsworth, the students  have planned a toast mural some 4  metres long. With over 90 loaves of bread to toast to different shades in order to represent the different tones in the image, the students soon realised that their domestic toasters may not be quite up to the job.

Peter Simpson, Operations Manager, Tourism and Hospitality at Nepean College was enlisted to help the students, assisting the students to toast 56 slices of bread at a time in the College's commercial kitchen.

With some difficulties arising in obtaining a rich  (burnt) black, a decision has been made to use vegemite on some of the toast to achieve the darkest tone.

NADC Fine Arts teachers Dianne Holdsworth and Jo Ernsten  are  exhibiting with four other artists  at  The Hawkesbury Regional Gallery in a show opening  at  6pm on Friday 10th  May. The exhibition  is called 'The Golden Age' and reveals  each artists  interpretation  on the theme. Works include paintings, prints and sculptures.

Marian Marcatili's group show

NADC ceramics teacher Marian Marcatili is part of an exhibition of ceramic artists who are using light in their work in a range of ways. The exhibition is entitled 'Lucent: glowing with light' and opens this Friday May 20th at Kerrie Lowe Gallery in Newtown. Marian is showing with 10 other ceramic artists working with light in a range of forms from table lamps through to installations. 

The exhibition runs until June 7.

Jennifer Gabbay's group show at UWS

How to find Nepean Arts and Design Centre

You can find Nepean Arts and Design Centre on the Kingswood Campus of Nepean College: 12-44 O'Connell St Kingswood: enter via Gate 2 in O'Connell St, and proceed to Building P. For ceramics inquiries , please go to Building C (enter via Gate 2, park in the first carpark on your left) To get to NADC: If coming from the city by car:  Take the M4 west and take the Northern Road exit.  Turn right at Northern Road then turn right into Bringelly Road Continue until first round about and turn right into Second Avenue. Continue to the end of the street where you reach O’Connell Street and the College.   Turn right into O’Connell Street and then immediately left into Gate 2 and follow the road to the end to Block P. Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize calls for entries

Those who have entered NADC's annual mini-works exhibition in the past, or plan to enter this July, may also wish to consider entering the Woollahra Small Sculture Prize

The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize is now in its 11th year, and is the only national prize for free standing sculptures with dimensions less than 80 centimetres. Entries for the annual prize opened on the 1st of May.

The prize will be judged by leading art identities Dr Gene Sherman AM, Executive Director of the Sherman Contemporary Art Foundation, and Professor Ted Snell AM, Chair of the Visual Arts Board of the Australia Council, Director of the Cultural Precinct for the University of Western Australia.
The Woollahra Small Sculpture Prize includes:

• An acquisitive award of $10,000;
• The Special Commendation, non-acquisitive award of $2,000; and
• The Viewer’s Choice, non-acquisitive award, of $1,000.

Woollahra Mayor Isabelle Shapiro said more than 500 entries are expected this year. “Size is certainly no obstacle when it comes to creativity or imagination,” she said.

“Over the past decade, we have seen an amazing variety of sculptures from a flying horse made from bullets, shells, chrome and blue tongue lizard skin to a forest made of sandstone.

“Some of the other unique materials that have been used to create sculptures have included stainless steel pot scourers, entomology pins, kangaroo fur, a pair of old boots and concrete.

“I am looking forward to seeing what kind of surprises there will be in this year’s competition.”

Entry forms are available on the website from 9am on Sunday 1 May. Sculptures must be submitted by 5pm on Friday 5 August. Finalists will be selected in mid-August with winners being announced on Friday 21 October. Go to http://sculptureprize.woollahra.nsw.gov.au/
